Description
The Rough Riders was a nickname given to the 1st United States Volunteer Cavalry, one of three such regiments raised in 1898 for the Spanish–American War. In the style of the tales of the old west, these men were perfect for adventure stories sold in dime magazines. Dime novels, spanned the era of the 1860s—1900s. Most had standard elements; a cool detached hero, a frontiersman (later a cowboy), a fragile heroine in danger of the despicable outlaw, savage Indians, violence and gunplay, and the final outcome where Truth and Light wins over all.
